Il Complesso's repertoire combines some classics of the Italian songbook. However, these Italian tunes are not played exactly the way your "nonna" remembers them. Each tune is given a modern, soulful setting, adaptable for a concert performance or for the backdrop for an Italian-themed event. The group then mixes in some modern Italian pop tunes, lesser-known Brazilian gems and jazz standards made famous by singers like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett.
The group features vocalist Davide Valenti, who doubles as a professor of foreign language, so the Italian lyrics are all authentic. Even the Brazilian tunes are all sung in the original Portuguese. Dave Henning plays piano and keyboard while Pete Gitlin switches between bass and guitar, giving the band a variety of sounds at each performance. When the situation allows for it, a horn player, drummer or percussionist will also be added to the mix.
